Why Is Parental Involvement Important In A Child’S Education?



Numerous researches have been conducted to support the issue that parents who are involved in their children’s education are building the foundations for a better educated child. These children are better adjusted to school which usually leads to life-long learning. Additionally, parental involvement sends a message directly from the parent to the child that education is important.

Parental involvement is directly correlated to reading achievement; reading is emphasized and becomes enjoyable when parents begin reading to their children at a young age. Children begin to understand the importance of reading and monitoring the child’s achievement becomes routine which keeps the child on the right grade level for reading throughout the educational process. Students’ reading performance is a big educational issue in America. Parents who develop a strong educational foundation in reading assist their children in future endeavors and life goals. Another pertinent reason for parents to be directly involved with their children’s education is that deficiencies can be noticed quickly. Early recognition of a child’s strengths and weakness helps to develop a child’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and can be addressed in the child’s daily instruction.

Equally important, is the fact that parents who are involved with their children’s education will make sure their home is conductive to learning. This means that the home will have plenty of books available for the children to read. The home will also have a variety of reference materials and tools available, such as: encyclopedias, magazines, a computer and other electronics, pens, pencils, paper, etc. The home usually has a designated area for study which allows for quietness and concentration for school work. Creating an educational atmosphere also includes limiting the amount of television viewed throughout the week. Homework is usually completed at the same time everyday, and if homework has not been issued it is often created by an involved parent.

Parent/Teacher Conferences and volunteer services for activities at school are equally important at demonstrating the significance of an education and building strong bonds for communication. Children observe their parents, and they realize that their education is important to their parent. Furthermore, school officials are appreciative of the parents who are involved and volunteer their services both in and out of the classroom. Parents become knowledgeable on educational issues and school funding sources which often lead to additional learning advantages and opportunities for their child.

The involved parent understands the importance of reading, having an educational environment that is conducive to learning and communicating and volunteering with the school personnel. Parents who are involved in their child’s learning process help them to build a strong educational foundation; these are the students who tend to excel academically and become the top of their class. Parental involvement is not something in which a parent should have a choice but something in which a parent must be involved.

Working at home during the summer creates challenges for the WAHM. As the summer begins, there’s a lot to keep the kids entertained and give Mom time to work on her business. As the summer progresses, however, choruses of ‘Mom I’m bored’ ring out, causing otherwise mild mannered Moms to throw up their hands in complete desperation; right before they start planning an escape route.

Moms can’t escape for too long however, and kids have an uncanny knack of finding the hiding spot anyway. So what can you do to keep your business in tact during the summer months when the cherubs are effectively running the show?

How flexible are you? No, I don’t mean can you play a mean game of Twister while baking a pan of blueberry muffins, but rather, how willing or able are you to adjust your normal work at home day to meet the ever changing demands of tireless children?

Planning and preparation will make your life less stressful. Before summer vacation begins, do some research to find local youth programs being offered and enroll your kids. Make lists of ‘things to do’ and have ready all of the needed supplies so your school age kids can entertain themselves.

Be realistic. Come to terms with the fact that you may not be as productive during the summer, and schedule your work to make the best use of your time.

Summer challenges for WAHMs do not have to cripple your business. Find local groups and activities for your kids to participate in and remember, time with your kids will pass all too soon, and summer vacation is just one part of WAHM life.

Smoking and Breastfeeding



As a smoker, you are utterly aware of the fact that quitting this habit is not a stroll in the park. In fact, as a pregnant mother, you may be contemplating about going back to smoking after your baby’s delivery. Before taking a trip to the grocery store to satisfy your cravings, read on first to weigh the pros and cons of smoking and breastfeeding.

Smoking and breastfeeding effects

Just as passive smoke bring about negative effects on your baby’s immune system, smoking and breastfeeding increase the risk of your baby’s infections. There is also strong scientific evidence suggesting that if you smoke, you are more likely to wean early.

Breast milk supply for your baby is relatively lower if you smoke than if you don’t smoke. This is for the reason that nicotine decreases the prolactin in your bloodstream. Also, there is a great propensity for your baby to be colicky if you smoke while breastfeeding.

Smoking and breastfeeding may reduce your baby’s resistance against sudden infant death syndrome. The same is true in your baby’s protection against thyroid infections and brain problems. This is for the reason that nicotine diminishes the transport of iodine to breast milk. Similarly, nicotine in your breast milk can bring about such negative effects on your baby as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.

Smoking and breastfeeding vs. no breastfeeding

Several scientific studies back up the claim that smoking and breastfeeding is actually better for your baby than weaning early or not breastfeeding at all. This is for the reason that breastfed babies of smoking mothers have a lower risk of developing infections and diseases than formula-fed babies as a lot of nutrients present in breast milk cannot be offered by formula milk.

To quit or not to quit smoking

While health experts strongly emphasize the need for breastfeeding mothers to quit the cigarette habit, they have several suggestions for you, the smoking and breastfeeding mother. The most important of these is to never smoke in a room where your baby is to avoid aggravating the effects of nicotine on your baby’s immune system.

Make sure to wait a few hours after smoking and prior to breastfeeding as it takes 95 minutes for half of the nicotine to be eliminated from your body. Also, limit your cigarettes to 20 sticks per day since anything more than that increases your baby’s risk to nicotine. If you choose to turn to nicotine replacement products as substitutes, ingest them only after your breastfeeding sessions with your baby. Remember, too, not to add smoking to such replacement products.

Since iodine is not transported to your breast milk, it is wise to consult your health provider about supplements which may increase your iodine levels. Moreover, avoid eating vegetables such as pureed tomatoes, cauliflower and eggplant since they contain nicotine. Lastly, don’t try to schedule your breastfeeding sessions and instead let your baby dictate when he/she wants to drink your milk.

Five Steps to Your Personal Comeback



You’ve decided that you want to be more joyous, but don’t know what consistent actions to take to create this bliss. You didn’t lose touch with yourself overnight, so plan on taking the time needed to learn what makes you happy. Here are 5 steps to take to create more contentment in your life and set the stage for your personal comeback:

1. Take the time to figure out what is most important to you, personally. Although God and family are usually at the top of this list, this question is posed to get you thinking about what you need in order to be at your best. For me, I need to be centered. I have to have a balanced life! What one thing do you absolutely need to make your life more enjoyable? Focus on attaining this one item every day by taking small steps to craft your ideal existence.

2. Know that what you have to say is valuable and important. Make a habit of contributing in any situation that you find yourself, whether it’s a classroom setting, the PTA, your work environment, or in social situations. The more you speak up, the more you become confident in your voice. And you’ll begin to look for opportunities to be able to express your opinion. Overall, this will do wonders in boosting your self-esteem.

3. Function in your life as if you’re not a victim, because you’re not. Things sometimes happen in our lives that are beyond our control. We all have been victims in our lives, one time or another. The problem lies in us thinking that we’re always a victim in situations. We all choose our paths and circumstances. Don’t make the mistake of blaming others for what you’ve chosen. By placing the blame squarely on our own shoulders, we are truly empowering ourselves and getting back in the driver’s seat. If you find yourself blaming others when things go awry, say to yourself, “I am not a victim. I have a choice as to how I approach life.”

4. Choose happiness…no matter what! Situations may not be perfect, as life seldom is. But our happiness lies in our approach to life. Awake each day saying, “I am thankful and appreciative. I choose to be happy regardless of what happens today!”

5. Arrest self-sabotaging thoughts in their tracks. If you find yourself thinking self-defeating thoughts, do what exercise guru Richard Simmons suggests. Cancel every negative thought with two positive thoughts. In time, you’ll seldom have self-destructive feelings.

If you find that you’re having problems moving forward, then you may need additional help. At this point, you may want to consider hiring a life coach or joining/organizing a mastermind group. Another great option is to use meditation CDs to help in your personal growth.

By consistently practicing the above steps, you should accelerate your movement toward contentment. Once you feel content, you’ll want to look the part. Remember funky mamas are happy mamas and present their best selves!
