Any parent that has had Toddlers have went through Toddler Bedtime problems. Most of us run into this problem when our child is getting ready to go to pre-school or Kindergarten. It can be one of the most stressful times in our home. Some even say more so than potty training. Here are a few tips to help you though this rough time in you home…
Establish a Routine – Toddlers need to have a need to understand what to expect. When you establish a nightly routine you help the toddler understand whats next. Here is an example of a Nightly Routine that I have used for my kids
15 Minutes Prior to the beginning of the routine let you kids now its almost (Story Time / Bath Time) * Try and not use the words Bed time as it will cause resistance… 5 Minuets Prior Have your kids pick up their toys or books with you. Bath Time – Only allow at most 1 toy in the bath. Toys can adversely effect the bath times effects on winding you child down. Brush Teeth – Build this Health habit into your night time routine Story Time – Read to your child it will help them fall to sleep Prayers Good night hugs and kisses
Remember to defer the word bedtime as much as possible. let them think its more about personal time with you than time for bed.
Don’t Give in – This can be hard and it is a fine line. you need to maintain control and ensure that your toddler is not trying to push the boundaries. once you have went through the routine you need to be strong and ensure they stay in bed.
Be Comforting but not weak - When they push on your nerves don’t get mad. Try to be loving and firm at the same time. Keep the communication level to a minimum. The more you speak to your child at the end of the routine the more they will try and keep speaking with you.
